Understanding Antenatal Care: Why Regular Checkups Matter

Pregnancy is one of the most important journeys a woman will experience, and regular antenatal care plays a vital role in ensuring both mother and baby stay healthy throughout.

What is antenatal care? It refers to the medical checkups and support a woman receives from her healthcare provider during pregnancy. These visits help monitor the baby’s growth, detect potential complications early, and prepare the mother for a safe delivery.

Why it matters:

  • Early detection. Regular visits help identify conditions like preeclampsia, gestational diabetes, or anaemia before they become serious.
  • Tracking baby’s development. Ultrasounds and check-ups confirm the baby is growing well and in the correct position.
  • Guidance and education. Mothers receive advice on nutrition, safe exercise, and warning signs to watch for.
  • Vaccinations. Certain vaccines, like tetanus toxoid, are given during pregnancy to protect both mother and child.

When to start: Ideally, antenatal visits should begin as soon as pregnancy is confirmed, continuing regularly throughout all three trimesters.

At Doren Specialist Hospital, our Gynaecology and Obstetrics team is dedicated to providing compassionate, comprehensive care for expectant mothers ,  from the first checkup to delivery and beyond.
